Sustainability vs. Risk – The Packaging Dilemma
Everyone wants sustainability—until the shipment is at risk.
Reduce CO₂. Reduce waste. Move to reusable systems. All valid. All necessary. But in pharma logistics, every optimization has a consequence. Less material may mean less thermal protection. Reusable systems require stable return flows. Lighter solutions may struggle under real-world stress conditions.
And here is the uncomfortable part:Sustainability decisions are often made without fully understanding operational risk.
From my perspective, this is where the industry needs to become more honest. There is always a trade-off. The question is not whether we can be more sustainable.
The question is: how much risk are we willing to accept? Because product integrity remains non-negotiable. Sustainability must be risk-adjusted—not driven by targets alone.
